Nail fungus is also known as Onychomycosis or Tinea Unguium. The nail fungus is made up of tiny organisms, which infect one's fingernails and toenails. By nature, nails are very strong and highly resistant to infections of any kind. They serve as effective barriers against all kinds of fungi and infections. However, in the event that a fungus manages to infect the nails, the resistant nature of the nails acts against the infected person and it becomes very difficult to treat the infection. The nail proves to be a very safe place for the fungus to grow and increase the infection, which is why it is very hard to reach and stop the infection. Toenails are more likely than fingernails to have the nail fungus growing in them, because socks and shoes keep the toenails warm, moist and damp, which is the ideal condition for the fungus to grow.

At first, the fungus affects the base and the edges of the nail, making it red and itchy. As the fungus grows and spreads around the nail, the appearance of the nail entirely changes. The nails become yellow-green or even yellow-brown and may also develop white spots. The nails become thick and the person may experience some pain, around the flesh surrounding the nail.

Nail fungus can be contagious and thrive particularly in places such as shower stalls, locker rooms and bathrooms. It may also be passed on through nail filers and nail cutters. The fungus can also spread from one nail to another.

Although there are many topical creams available in medicine shops for the treatment of nail fungus, the best treatment is prevention. One should take good care of their nails and their feet. Washing hands and cleaning the nails regularly is another effective method. Also, wearing clean socks and shoes, washing one's feet regularly and keeping them dry and ventilated will help in the prevention of nail fungus.
